It seems that few things get done today, if not in a project fashion. For me that is by a cross departmental team in a tiered production style with multiple deadlines and milestones across the time line.
Since 1997 I have almost constantly worked in project teams of many different kinds. Back then I led a team as project manager devising and exectuting marketing campaigns for the business-to-business sector.
My next job was producing business conferences and exhibitions from scratch. Again I was project manager, and led teams of 10+ through the process of research, production, marketing and eventual execution of these events. My first conference had the highest gross sales of the office at that time. Later I broke the corporation record for highest sales and net revenue on a single conference. These were projects with budgets of £170,000+, which I was personally responsible for.
As a former investment banker I have been responsible for larger budgets than that, but adding people and a long list of very different tasks to the list, I think these projects were far more challenging. As a person with an artistic temperament adhering to strict deadlines doesn't come easy for me. But to make up for it, at least it is a production form I have been practising for quite some time.
It almost goes without saying that while studying games design & art at University of Teesside, we have also carried out a multitude team based project work. Some of which I have led, some of which I have participated in as a common member of the group. Despite the artistic and design based nature of our university projects, I feel reassured that it is basically the same principles that govern the process no matter what the subject matter is.
I believe the added experience will give me a little extra edge in the heat of the crunch!
